As always, Didion’s reflections on California feel so rooted in reality (or her reality, at least), that I have no choice but to resort to fantasy. As I read, I head west to Sacramento; I take up residence in a small apartment on Alcatraz. I see the world as she sees it, and I wish the world could always be this way.

Four stars alone for "Some Dreamers of the Golden Dream," "On Keeping a Notebook," "On Self Respect," "On Morality," and "Goodbye to All That." Don't much remember the rest.

I love Joan Didion’s casual prose and the way she can transport a reader to a different place & time.  The topics of these essays are very intriguing and at gives a great insight into both California in the 1969s but also her internal world.
