I love Joan Didions writing and I loved these essays. I thought they were all so unique and interesting, they made me think. She tends to write with such care particularly about her home and the places she has been. I adored the essay about Joan Baez. I look forward to reading Where I Was From soon and reading more of her work on California.

Wish I could say how much I loved it but don't have the time to write a hundred thousand words!

I went through it slower than anticipated, not sure why
Favorite essays were "Some Dreamers of the Golden Dream", "On Keeping a Notebook", and "I Can't Get That Monster Out of my Mind". The prose was so atmospheric and pointedly observant; reading it felt like being told stories by your semi-estranged, witty aunt who you meet for the first time in adulthood and hit it off with immediately.

good book, i liked the white album more
Gorgeous writing, I love Didion’s cadence and how she transports you to the sun bleached californian landscape. On Keeping a Notebook is one of my all time favourite essays - “what kind of magpie keeps this notebook” resonates with me deeply. Became a bit monotonous by the end - I preferred the White Album as a whole collection.
