This is an adventure story, pure and simple. Not much character development. Not that interesting but essential if you love Lord John, obviously.
That said, you are in good hands with Gabaldon, as always, and she knows her period.

This was a quick novella that didn't really grab me. After a disastrous duel, John Gray is called to Canada to testify in a court martial.

It was fun and fluffy, so I liked it. Not the best as far as the Lord John Grey stories go, though.

Lord John appeals in a tale that is otherwise so mediocre

Another fantastic story, loved more time with Lord John, and I can't wait to read more!

From my review of the first book in the Lord John Series, because every book deserves a review:

When I discovered Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series about three years ago, I devoted a whole summer to reading it in its entirety. But then I was finished and decided to turn my attention to other books, other authors. There are so many books and so little time.
If you've read any of my other book reviews this year, you'll see that I was in a bit of a book rut. I've been reading lots of new, buzzy books and have been completely disappointed.
I want to read a book with excellent writing that's also entertaining. I needed some action. I needed some adventure. I needed Diana Gabaldon. I'm not one to reread books (see comments above.) So I decided to try out the Lord John series. I was not disappointed.
Lord John and the Private Matter is fast paced. I finished it in a day and half. I am cured of my book rut. I hope there are more Lord John books to come!

This is a John Grey novella that takes place at the Battle of Quebec during the French and Indian War.

Another lord john book I wasn't all that into :( for me it just felt like DG had come across some interesting facts to put into a story so built a story around them.

I originally forgot about this one and started reading The Scottish Prisoner, and when I realized I was missing some stuff they kept talking about I went back and started this one. So. Lord John's sent to Canada after a scandalous duel, and there are indians. Gay ones, of course. Lord John sure does coincidentally meet an awful lot of random gay people. Really short and nothing really happens. It seems to be just a setup for The Scottish Prisoner, really.
