Over two millennia and yet the emotions feel as contemporary as ever. From the the bitterness of a modern subtweet (e.g. poem 80) to the brief tenderness of a notes-app lament (e.g. poem 85), this is a mixed bag for sure. Some poems lost me since they definitely require an academic eye to understand/enjoy, otherwise a fun read.

The filthiest, most degrading, bitter and twisted poetry ever written... naturally I loved it

Lukukokemus oikeastaan 4,5 tähteä. Riemastuttavaa irroittelua. Onnistunut draaman kaari kokoelmassa. Alkupuoli iloluontoista, keskivaiheilla upeaa eeppistä runoelman tuntua kreikkalaisessa mytologiassa ja loppupuoli synkkää kamaa. Aiheina: seksi, juopottelu, politiikka, kaupunkielämä vapaana miehenä, ystävyys, naiset, miehet, rakkaus. Tyyli: ronski, iloluonteinen, satiirinen, sivaltava, karskisen hauskanpitoinen, välitöntä, pinkeydestä vapaata, kukkoilu-läpänheittoisaa, tarkkoja havaintoja tekevää, suoraa ja ajoittain kohteensa huumorintajua ja sietokykyä koettelevaa. Rooman tasavallan raunioilla rohkeata Caesarin pilkkaa.

This collection of poems has some truly beautiful verses on love and friendship, but even more on petty malice, degeneracy, and all around gross vice.

How critics could prefer Catullus over Horace is beyond me.

I enjoyed moments of genuine tenderness, and can appreciate his repeated dedication to one particular muse, but overall it was a difficult read because, when Catullus wants to be distasteful, he is really really distasteful.

The bukowski of ancient poets, but in a bad way, as i can actually sympathize with, and love Bukowski.
