Not sure if it's because it was translated, but in any case I really didn't enjoy this. The plot is very loose, each chapter seems disconnected from the others, and there are many events in which I had no idea what was happening or who characters were in relation to each other.

There are times with literature when the analogy goes over the readers head. I'm that reader this time. The underlying mystery of the character playing into the larger world kept me reading but I can't say that I enjoyed it.

This book surprised me in a lot of ways. The writing was very beautiful, and once I got used to the format I really enjoyed the story. This made me think about how a lot of the evils in this world are often self-inflicted. The main character was very compelling despite her stubbornness, and she never failed to surprise me.

Very strange and vaguely disturbing. I couldn’t put it down, yet wouldn’t read it again.

Either not for me or I'm just not in the mood for it right now

Different than anything I’ve ever read/listened to before. I listened to the audio version of this book via NetGalley. This book is interesting and at times confusing. There were parts I did not understand. The narration is good and the audio quality is fantastic. The story itself doesn’t hook you which I usually need from a book but it did keep me interested somewhat because I was trying to figure out what was going on. The “beasts” and humans having relationships was too strange a concept for me to grasp fully which slightly repulsed me at times during the book. If you can get past that and the descriptions of the beasts you’ll be okay.

I will think about this book for the rest of my life.

Either I am in a bad mood or I am out of sync with others readers or I have just happened to select a few books that are overrated but this did not impress me. I did wonder, briefly, if JK Rowling had stumbled across this before writing her 'Fantastic Beasts' screen plays, though. Anyway, I am not in love with 'Strange Beasts of China' but YMMV.

The most interesting and charming book I have read this summer. I loved it.
