While navigating her life as a young, unmarried professional, our protagonist has a series of dreamy, fleeting encounters with various species of mythical beast in the fictitious city of Yong'an. The underlying subtext indicates a Chinese public that has grown far too complacent and unobservant.

Sometimes the author really hits you on the head with her conclusions in the last paragraph or so of each chapter, though they can be construed from the earlier text ("so this must mean... the beast was eating children the whole time, while living underground!!"), but the stories are creative enough that I forgive her.
