This book just wasn’t resonating with me, not necessarily boring. Might come back to it in the future.
A quirky book for people who love music! Made me feel like I was on a trip to England. Can’t wait to listen to the Spotify Playlist! I want to work at The Music Shop!
Cute story about a man who r fused to sell anything other than vinyl records. He resisted the lure of CDs etc despite the fact that the street his ship was in was going downhill. He and others didn’t succumb to a property developer wanting to buy their properties. One day a young woman comes to the shop and he falls in love with her, but can’t tell her. Eventually his life falls apart and more than twenty years later the woman looks for him and finds him and they end up together, easy read
I devoured this book! I had chosen this book for my book discussion group that meets at the bar before having read the book but the description sounded very interesting. I, myself, am a huge vinyl lover. I started my vinyl collection around 2014 and I've amassed over 100 titles so far. I also studied music in school so I was already familiar with a lot of music mentioned in the book. I was hooked from the start! Yes, the music spoke to me but Joyce's characters were developed right from the beginning of the book. I felt connected to each character, similarly to how I felt reading [b:A Man Called Ove|18774964|A Man Called Ove|Fredrik Backman|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1405259930s/18774964.jpg|21619954] and other [a:Fredrik Backman|6485178|Fredrik Backman|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1493098924p2/6485178.jpg] books. This book is hilarious, causing me to laugh out loud several times. I also felt a wide spectrum of emotions in other sections of the book, happy and sad tears being among them. I've already recommended this book to several of my friends who I know love vinyl and music, or are fans of "Ove" and that world. If you love quirky characters and a fun story about the power of music, please do yourself a favor and read this book!! The chapters are nice and short and I promise you won't want to set it down. I would definitely add this book to my list of recent favorites (and I'm very particular about which books I put in this category).
A sweet love story between two solitary characters mostly set in 1988, but also a deep love letter to all forms of music.
This book has so many things that I adore, so was a perfect take-it-easy read for me! Music, romance, little twists and turns, and a beautiful ending.
Frank, although an absolute sweetheart, is almost too stubborn for his own good. Ilse comes along and shakes up his every-day norm, giving him a new lease of life and a way to be heard after being the listener for others for so long. I loved their dynamic, there were expected tiffs along the way but also events that you could just sit back and enjoy without thinking ‘of course!’.
The characters within the story were completely different to each other, but all came together and supported one another like a family which was beautiful! You could find qualities in all of them to relate to and like, but they also weren’t too perfect to spoil the story. It was so interesting to continuously flash back to Frank’s childhood and young adult life with his mother, Peg, to understand why he was the way he was and what had led up to that point!
I got a little too nosy for my own good and read through the Questions for Readers at the back of the book while I was only a quarter of the way through and spoiled somewhat of a pivotal moment for myself - so if you give this one a go, DO NOT SKIP TO THE BACK!

It wasn't bad. Characters were interesting, loved the music and the 80s. I just felt parts of it were too predictable, other things were built up and then when revealed it wasn't as huge of a deal as it seemed, and Idk I guess I just wanted more for the characters. Worth a read but fell a little short for me.
