I never thought a 32 page book could set me off on an emotional rollercoaster - heartbreak to elation. Well done, Mr. Naylor-Ballesteros!

The only reason I'm giving this two stars is because of the cute illustrations, but the story is horrible. How is this uplifting and heartwarming? Did anybody actually read this? I'm baffled.

It's really difficult to explain the emotional impact of this story without reading it for yourself. It manages to be lighthearted while also possessing a gravitas that is not overly didactic when it comes to how we should treat refugees and asylum seekers. This story is going to linger in my mind for a long time.

I liked the illustrations, and the overall message that you should help people who need help, there is an implication that the "stranger" has maybe suffered from mental health problems and fallen on hard times, but I was slightly disturbed that none of the other animals felt that strongly about breaking into his property, and there didn't seem to be any consequences for their appalling behaviour. You could argue that they made it right by building him a new house, but then they all sat down and had a cup of tea. I feel that the stranger was the nicest most forgiving creature to ever feature in a picture book.

Beautiful color palate and lovely design but I found the message about how to treat an immigrating person to be seriously flawed. Those shifty animals breaking into the new guy's suitcase! I understood their remorse but after that behavior it was difficult to see them 180 around to showing such support. It should a good one for storytime discussions.
