Darn, this was good. This was so good. A really amazing wrap-up to the story. I liked the villains, I loved Black Widow, I enjoyed the storyline - I don't want to pick permanent favorites - but right now this is my favorite Black Widow run.

This was an explosive, spectacular conclusion to an amazing storyline. The action hit harder in this one and there were more dramatic moments. There were some awesome appearances from other Marvel characters and familiar faces. I truly did love this series and wish it would have kept going, but also feel like it ended at the right time. Absolutely a must have for all Marvel fans!

The drawing and colors and the story makes this series a good agent-assassin-save-the-world-villain's-work-was-all-for-nothing type of action story. The issues where Natasha teamed-up with the Lion is actually a promising story of its own. There's the nice adventure of them using both their abilities for their advantage. When it was revealed that Lion actually sent the Dark Room girls I was quite disappointed. I wished they expanded the story and prolonged Lion's revenge until he was able to see that Natasha is trying her best to make up for her past. It would be an opportunity to tell a story of Lion and his cousin forgiving Nat and Nat forgiving herself, while saving the world. Then there's the reveal that Bucky had been watching Nat and actually saved her from the Red Room ruins. It was quite underwhelming and not so much build-up but maybe it was featured in a separate issue.

There was just nothing interesting here. I didn't care for the Natasha/Lion team-up, and the "olde villains from Natasha's past" storyline did nothing for me. The threat level and competency of one villain was completely inconsistent throughout the book, to the point where another character commented on it. Even the art left me flat.

Good, but definitely a bit rushed.

(Reviewing all 12 issues here)

Waid and Samnee’s short stint on Black Widow is one of the best books from this new era of marvel. The plot, while pretty basic, is engaging and I think Waid really nails the character of Natasha Romanoff. Samnee however, is on a whole other level throughout this series. His sense of movement through the panels and the way he draws action is top tier stuff.

The visual storytelling in this book is probably Samnee’s best work and yes, I’ve read his Daredevil. Samnee manages to completely captivate the reader whenever he draws these big epic action scenes. Waid even knows when to cut the dialogue to just have these 5, 6 page action scenes with no dialogue just fighting. This book is basically if the 5th issue of Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey’s Moon Knight was an entire 12 issue run. The action in Black Widow is top notch.

The other visual story tellers, Matt Wilson on colors and Joe Caramagna on letters, do fantastic jobs as well. Matt Wilson I’m particular has always been one of my favorite colorists. He really knows how to make his penciler’s lines pop while also setting the tone. In this book, he uses lots of bright reds to create a really tense atmosphere.

The main weak points in this run are definitely in certain plot points. I feel like some are explored a little shallowly and could’ve been expanded more upon. But the pace of the story is very quick and if we want to get these expansive, impressive and bombastic action set pieces, some corners need to be cut.

I’m going to go ahead and give Waid and Samnee’s Black Widow a solid 9/10. Despite a few narrative short comings, the visual story telling and action is unparalleled and revolutionary. Samnee is a genius and is among the upper echelon of artists working today.

This picks up faster than the first volume. I love the art, I love Nat, and you know I'm a sucker for Bucky always.

I didn't love this volume as much as the first one, but I'm struggling to identify why that is the case. It might be that the creators had to wrap things up too quickly. Maybe I just picked it up at a weird time - I did end up reading it in chunks.

Whatever the case may be, this is still a solid series. It's a Marvel comic, but it's much more a spy thriller than anything. It was darker and more violent in the first couple issues than I expected, but the core story of Natasha fighting against the realities of her past works well, and there are some interesting cameos.

(I've also realized that I have no idea what happened to Nick Fury, or when it happened.)

Kind of trying just a little too hard. A little too muddy. And no one in here I really care about, which is annoying because I like Natasha typically. The story felt a little too done to death. But again the bits were reasonable and the book was readable. But with Black Widow I just want more. And it'd be nice to see more consistent decent art as well. 3.5 of 5.
