Another fun adventure with Veronica and Stoker, I flew through the audiobook. I infinitely prefer these self-contained mysteries over the royal plotline we got in books 1 and 5. Thank goodness we're (presumably) done with the latter. 😅 I only wish we'd gotten more actual "detective work", which is my usual criticism of the books in this series.

I will say that I'm glad Veronica and Stoker continue to be as compelling as ever, even though they're done with the will-they-won't-they phase. I was a little scared their dynamic would become boring (kind of like how Veronica fears that domesticity will change her, haha) but Raybourn does not disappoint 💘 They understand each other on an almost molecular level. This book had one of the most romantic lines ever:
“You are not among the good that has happened to me. You are the best of all that I have known. You are what I searched for when I left that house and wandered this earth, boy and man. You are the part of myself I never thought to find because I did not even dare to dream you existed. You are all that I want and more than I deserve, and I will go to my grave thanking a god in whom I do not believe for bringing me to you.
Ugh, my heart!
