Wow. Wow wow wow.

A psychedelic sci-fi story written in Mr. Rogers simplicity, punctuated by searing poetry that comes in non-chalant shockwaves. Themes of hopeless insane romance, and cataclysmic loss. Either I'm just a serious sucker for this shit or it's as good as Márquez. Life affirming and soul destroying.

I wish I could experience this book for the first time all over again. I still have chills.

This one was way outside what i normally read but so good. Very “inception”-like, kinda reminiscent of Supermarket. Weird stuff. A mind-f*ck.

There are no words to describe the beauty and intensity of this book. Buy it, read it, and spend countless hours, days, weeks, even years thinking about this book. It will haunt you. It will make you question your very existence. To say it will be one of the best books you've ever read is an understatement.

"She reminds him of every good day he's ever had. every summer spent in fields of grass. Every sunrise. Every sunset. She tastes like dew and smells like light. And when she speaks, it's like someone slowly plucking the strings of a guitar, a sadly beautiful song starting to play, all his own. And he loves her."

I came across that passage on the internet and needed to find out where it came from. My searching led me to this book. So naturally I had to read it. Sadly, the book was nothing like this isolate passage. It was not a love story but a rather wild sci-fi dystopian ride. Now I love sci-fi and dystopian stories but this one was just too all over the place for me. And the ending left me anything but satisfied. It did have the odd gem passage inside but overall it was not for me.

I first read this at around 15 and loved it and kept. I took it off my shelf again now 7 years later to see if it held up to re-reading as an adult and in lot of ways it didn't. Partially its just not a genre that I'm very into, I don't read fantasy or dystopia or sci fi or any of the things this book could be described as. Some of the stuff about sadness felt very.... I get why I found it profound as a teenager and why I don't do anymore. However, there were also a few quite clever ideas, I liked the dips into first person, or directly addressing the reader. It was an easy book to read as well!

An enjoyable read, but nothing that has significantly affected me at all. Would recommend if youre interested, & the writing style was quite nice, but I wasnt too impressed.

I'm not sure if I truly liked the characters but I thought the story was great. The plot is intriguing and was well-developed. Other features of the book, like the annotation at the start of each chapter and the metaphorical repeat of the prologue and the first chapter at the end, are good contributions to the structure of the book (I'm a sucker for atypical book structures). Intentional Dissonance is anything but cliche and typical.
