While informative, the book feels rushed. The introductions to the subgenres are the most lengthy sections of the book and the women themselves often only get what amounts to 3-4 pages (in the Kindle edition). It is a surface level look at the history of women in speculative fiction and I wish the author took a deeper look at the topics chosen and then cultural views that drove them.

Time to update the want to read lists! This text opened my eyes to authors and works in genres I knew nothing about (a few I had read).

To all the girls who still sleep with the lights on, but read the scary stories anyway.

I felt a bit called out by this right at the start :D I'm not a big horror fan, although I'm a lover of all things spooky. This was an interesting read, specially the parts of the writers of the past and not the current/modern ones. For sure, I have some new authors to check out and to put on my TBR list. It was also a cozy read, sort of, the chapters written in such a way you can just pick up the book for a while when you find small pockets of time, and put it down until the next one.
