Picked this up because I like the TV show and it’s so different they really aren’t that comparable. One of the few times I think the TV adaptation is actually better than the book. The constant flashbacks and lack of concrete plot make this kind of boring, and the ending where she ends up going on a date with Conrad comes almost out of nowhere. Not to mention all of her interactions with Taylor scream 2010s “not like other girls” crap. They really don’t even seem like friends from Belly's POV in this book, which is such a bummer because in the show (and sort of in the book but definitely not as much) Susannah and Laurel’s lifelong friendship is at the heart of the story and it feels like the female friendships not being a big focus here too is a missed opportunity.
I think I would have liked this book a lot better had I read it when I was in middle or high school. However, reading it in my 20s, I was less than enthused with the narration style, which just felt immature. This isn't anything against the author, as I think the narration matches a 15-year-old girl fairly well; it just wasn't my cup of tea for what I wanted to read.
