What feminism is supposed to be...
While the prose and flow was haulting and at times difficult to get through I found myself loving and hating Allene for too many reasons to list. But by the end I had to admit that I respected her she never settled for anything not love, not status, not prejudice or injustices and in an age where so many women were trapped and powerless I think we can all learn something from her.

I don't usually read Biographies, but I am challenging myself to read more books from around the world (More about this in another post)
This story was so interesting, it was interesting to be able to read a story which included a lot of American History, which being British, doesn't get taught in schools. It also shows how British and American history do overlap.
I really liked the way that Annejet Van der Zijl writes, her style is beautiful and just made reading this book so much more pleasurable.
The story contains new paper clipping and other information which ties in with everything in the story regarding Allene. She is a Woman you can admire, after everything she went through she never let anything get her down.
She is a very clever lady, who was unlucky in life but managed to keep her fortune throughout all the hard times including the American depression on Wall Street.
I highly recommend this book to everyone, even if Biographies are not for you.
Annejet Van der Zijl also explains at the end of the book what compelled her to write a story about Allene Tew.

A fascinating read about Allene Tew. I had never heard of her but after reading this book I’m surprised that I hadn’t. She had a fascinating life that spanned truly interesting times and showed that with gumption and a little luck the world is your oyster.
This is a translated book and I found the cadence a little odd. I read an uncorrected proof however so this may change in the final
product. Don’t let this put you off though as it’s a minor inconvenience to read about her surprising life.

A lovely change of pace. It didn’t read as fiction, but more a documentary type recounting. Still fairly fascinating, she was definitely a lady who adapted. Very much enjoyed this.

Allene Anson Burchard-Tew groeit op rond het Chautauqua meer waar vandaan zij niet veel later vertrekt om te trouwen met haar eerste echtgenoot Theodore Hostteter. We volgen de intelligente Allene door de 20ste eeuw waarin zij een fascinerend leven lijdt in een onstuimige tijd.
Een tijdje terug sprak ik een docent Nederlands en zij vertelde dat ik dit boek moest lezen! Een klein stukje (Nederlandse) geschiedenis die niet veel mensen kennen... Ik ben blij dat ik het heb opgepakt. Het leest makkelijk weg, omdat het zo intrigerend is. Allene was een intelligente, zelfstandige vrouw die wist hoe zij moest handelen. Fijn om weer een stukje geschiedenis-kennis rijker te zijn!

I typically have such a hard time with non-fiction in the evenings, but this was very cozy narrative bedtime reading. I enjoyed this and learning about Allene Tew, but I will say that anyone who finds herself married to a Nazi (even as a surprise) should take a good hard look at her life choices.
