I joined the author's newsletter and got this book for free, as I just bought the first book in the series I decided to start with the prequel first. It was a decent read, but it really served for me only as a very short introduction of the main character and some of the themes. The story felt a bit meandering and I wasn't really sure what the plot was supposed to be as there was a bit of multiple things, but not clear direction.

I liked getting to know Laurel a bit and there was some information about her being a witch and what that means, but as it's a short read there just isn't enough to really get a good feel for it and understand how things work. I liked the lighthearted vibe of the book and the mix between mundane and magical aspects.

There were some interesting scenes toward the end and there's enough to make me curious about the first book, but I felt this book might be more fun if you already read book 1 to go back and see what Laurel's first days at university were like. I thought it worked less well as introduction to the author's work. I look forward to reading the first book.

I love that this is so kind! Laurel is a witch, and off to her first year of uni in Wellington. She doesn't know anyone, and her familiar is not allowed in the halls of residence. (Her familiar comes along anyway.) She makes friends and finds a way to make potions in the kitchen and keep her cat out of sight... but there's another cat in the halls, another witch, and Laurel is suddenly less alone than she thought.

It's warm and friendly and everyone is likeable, and the author's prose, as always, is so accomplished and an absolute pleasure to read.
