It's a lot to take in but for someone who is trying to slow down in life, this is a good first step. It allows you to take a step back in seeing the big picture and gives some practical guidance in learning to slow down. My only other feedback is more intentionality in addressing the intersection of privilege and isms people face that may be a barrier in the slow-paced life.
About as good as a collection of anecdotes and vaguely personal musings can be, with some tantalizing hints of detail scattered here and there. I'm all for patience, care, and slowness of process; this, however, is not a book that will repay the devotion of slowness. For that you'll need philosophy, art, poetry. It's a good start though.
Interesting read, I feel that it confirmed thoughts I already had, and although this book is older, it was good to read about studies done proving that slowing down is so beneficial, in so many areas of our lives. I’m sure there have been many more studies done since then and would be interesting to look into that! I liked that it also had a personal perspective to it, since the author himself tried new methods and wrote about his experience, as well.

I went in expecting romanticism of every day life and ideas for simplicity. Instead it was a very basic informational text in which the obvious was presented as if it was profound. And the author was so obsessed with Japan. I felt several sentences were even racist tbh. If you need to write a whole book to understand patiently reading to your toddler is worthwhile i just don’t trust you to be a very good person.

While I enjoyed the concept, the execution was lacking and surprisingly tone deaf at times. It was written in the early 2000s and reads as such with all of the pearl clutching of the time.
