What I am about to say may be contriversial (and I invite all people more vested in Marvel Comics to provide me with a history lesson if I this is unfounded), but I think that Dr McNinja is Deadpool before Deadpool - a hyperviolent, fourth-wall breaking hero that precedes the merc with the mouth.

To my knowledge, most of what we know about current Deadpool begins with Daniel Way's run (which begins in 2008 to Christopher Hastings beginning in 2004).

This is not to suggest one pulled inspiration from the other - this is clearly a case of convergent evolution - but if one wanted to get an idea of the difference between the two: Dr McNinja does not require the backdrop of the entire Marvel Comic universe to tell and propel its story. I enjoy both, and will be happily educated if I am wrong on the timing.

Anyways, I was pleasantly surprised to discover, upon pulling the history of this author up on Goodreads, that hastings actually has done runs of both Deadpool and Gwenpool, so it appears that a similar mind has found its own way to the franchise!

Hastings does a wonderful job of using everything and the kitchen sink to to tell the story of this Irish Medical Practitioner who also happens to have a lineage that tracks back to feudal Japan. One thing that I appreciate about this is the experimental use of format. This apparently was originally a webcomic, so the read and story are able to stray from the rigid panel spread you would typically get with a traditional comic.

Very eager to see that this series is concluded, with 2 more volumes to hunt down!

I will always love these comics for their quirkiness. They are entertaining and the art is some of my favorite.

Even if this collection of stories existed as an idea only, it would still be the greatest idea in the history of humanity.

A DOCTOR WHO IS ALSO A NINJA. AN IRISH DOCTOR-NINJA. Does it need to be spelled out? It's great. The premise alone would, you would think, be a one-trick-pony, but it's ably fluffed out here with the judicious application of mustachioed gangsters, breaking glass, pirate feuds, velociraptors and gorillas.

Throughout these stories - which helpfully reproduce the image alt-text, so important to its online origin - the reader has the feeling that the author can't really believe that so many people are actually digging his idea. It's refreshing, given the amount of assumed knowledge that exists in some other graphic novels.

Really, this review is not going to do any good. I'm not going to convert anyone. I mean, if you didn't start jumping up and down at the thought of an IRISH NINJA DOCTOR, then you probably would never want to read this, ever.

But if you did... enough said.
