I skipped the first 250 pages to get to the 'real' hitchhiking story. I was disappointed when I realised just how much if the book was a 'novella' and fictionalised. I did start reading it but I really didn't like the writing style, it felt so forced and trying to be funny.
The real rides section was okay, but it felt rushed and he seems very into himself and not as interested about what's going on around him. I just feel it could have been fleshed out a bit more.

A fun read. I love John Waters more than I did before. At first I wasn't sure how I felt about the fictional good rides/bad rides fantasy he included... but after looking at the reality of his trip I totally understand it. May everyone find a "corvette kid" in their life.

Definitely Entertaining...and great on audio. John Waters has hatched a plan to hitchhike from Baltimore to San Francisco and write about the process. The book is in 3 parts- the first being his ideal pickups, the second his worst-case scenario, and the last being his actual experiences. I ended up skipping through a lot of the "novella" portions of the book because I wanted the real narrative of John's hitchhiking. It was fun and a good listen.

What a fun book! Broken up into three sections, the author writes a fictionalized best-case hitchhiking trip from Baltimore to San Francisco, a fictionalized worst-case trip and finally ends with the non-fiction version of what really happened. It is racy and witty and sometimes political. Definitely worth a read.

Pure fantasy. The first part is the Good Rides, the second part is the Bad Rides, but at some point, it's hard to tell which is which because Waters loves the drama. This was a little disappointing because I would think that hitchhiking across the country would actually provide enough content for a real book of real experiences. As a friend said to me, "How do you know they weren't real?" Probably the first chapter where a marijuana dealer from WV has his ethereal girlfriend help him dig up $5 million to help fund Waters' next film. Sorry, pure fiction. There's also the chapter where he is possibly raped by an alien. So, I'll let you decide if this is fact or fiction. As you read, you will agree with me.

Quite disappointed to find only 1/3 of this book was the actual hitchhiking story, the other 2/3 was fiction and not particularly interesting. Even the actual hitchhiking stuff was bland. Didn't hate it but wouldn't recommend it
