This a short story by the author of Gone Girl. It will leave you asking, "What the heck did I just listen to?" It was so very Gillian-Flynn-like. Oddly enjoyable.

This story is a dark, sinister, and sometimes funny read, in the beginning. Then it takes an unexpected, and, disappointing, shift. The ending was less enjoyable because of the final twist of events. I wish she had continued with the kid's first storyline at the end.
3.5 stars
As usual, Gillian Flynn is a master at writing complex, not-exactly-likeable-but-still-interesting characters. The way she writes scenes and descriptions is always slightly eerie and sets the tone for the entire story. The unnamed main character starts by telling us a little about her life and how she ended up at the point she is now – acting as a phony psychic and giving out the occasional handjob for her favorite old clients.
In comes Susan, a very nervous, very rich woman who thinks there's something wrong with her new house and with her stepson, Miles. Looking to score a couple of thousand bucks, the main character offers to do a cleansing of the house. That's where the real golden part of the story begins. We don't have a clue of what's going on. We don't know if there's something supernatural or if people are just batshit crazy, or if someone's fucking with her. It's fast-paced, and mysterious, and it made me hold my breath the entire time.
It's a stellar mystery right up to the ending, where the story takes an U-turn in another attempt to wow the reader, but instead it just lost me. I didn't think the character's final decisions where cohesive with the personality she'd shown us, and the open ending didn't sit right with this kind of story. It was still a very entertaining quick read, though.

I didn't stop giving handjobs because I'm not good at it. I stopped giving handjobs because I was the best at it.

One day, I was wiping down the floorboards, and suffered a sudden, slicing pain in my middle finger–as if I'd been bitten–and when I pulled it away, I was bleeding. I wrapped my finger tightly in one of my spare rags, and watched the blood seep through. And I felt like something in the house was pleased.
