The Grownup has a decent blend of dark comedy and surrealist horror to it. Flynn is particularly good at quickly setting up tense scenarios, using specific details.
Sadly, though, her main character isn't very interesting and she spends the last 20 pages of the story explaining everything. This undercuts all of the suspense she has patiently built throughout the story.
It's not all bad. I still really love her writing, which is natural and fluid. This story in particular, though, felt very rushed. Not much depth in terms of characterization or plot.

For a book that is only 67 pages long, the number of twists it takes makes it one of the best short stories I have ever read. Completely predictable as it starts only to subvert everything you’ve learnt over and over again. Would completely recommend to anyone, was such an easy book to read.
Damn....Just damn. This book is a such a mind f-word. I literally read this is just 30 minutes. I was sucked in from the first page and then I kept on being drawn into this twisted narrative. From the writing to the characters to the plot to the setting, all of these were just so magnificent. I know this may be an unpopular opinion, but I really enjoyed the ending. Yes, I have a ton of questions that go unanswered, but the mind f-word of this that you can choose whatever you want to believe. And that is just brilliant. You can choose to believe in three different scenarios, with each being perfectly viable. If you want a scary, dark read, I highly suggest that you check this out.
