Love this series. The characters are believable and likeable and the crimes are good too.

This was a great sequel to an excellent first book. While the first book was entirely from Jon's POV (except for the epilogue), in this book Jon and Donovan each get their own mostly alternating chapters, which offers some great opportunities to see Jon being Jon from Donovan's POV.
Besides a new case, there's a few new characters, in particular Donovan's former army buddy Garrett, who quickly fits in perfectly at Psy Agency.
The new case is especially demanding on Jon, so it is really a showcase for how well their relationship is developing. Jon's insecurities, Donovan's protective nature, Jon's dedication to his job clashing with Donovan's instincts all ensure both character development while moving the story line along.
The addition of Garrett provides some comic relief. Two army buddies with tons of stories on each other who act like brothers is a tried -and-true method to insert some humour into a story. Of course, because this is written by AJ Sherwood, Garrett is more than simply a comedian. He has known Donovan much longer than Jon and is able to give some insights into his character and history and he is almost as protective as Donovan.
All in all, I really enjoyed this book and I still love both Jon and Donovan. I hope we get many more books with this dynamic duo. The author mentions Brandon, Donovan's brother a few times. Equally protective but perhaps not as patient, which sounds like an interesting combination, so I hope we actually get to meet him in the next book.

Omg I love Jon and Donovan SO MUCH. I love that they have a healthy relationship that they work for. I love Donovan's Teddy Bear personality and the way he goes Grizzly when someone threatens Jon's.

The case itself was wow. I loved the climax and I totally did not expect that. Just, wow.

Reread 11/20: I still love Donovan just as much. He's adorable and so GOOD. Garrett was a fun side character too. The perfect best friend, lol.

Audio listen 10/24: Love the audiobook, despite the narrator change. It felt good to read Jon and Donovan's story again.

A few months following the events of the last case, and we've settled into a nice rhythm. I can see the formula of this series now, and it's one that I really like. I also like that exciting the unexpected is, well, an expectation with this series. Because I absolutely did not see any of the events of this mystery coming. Not by a long shot.

Jon and Donovan have settled well into their relationship now. But neither man is without his insecurities. And while those insecurities don't play a major role in the overall plot of this book, they are addressed, and they add to the character building. Both of them have trauma they're bringing into this relationship, and they both try to communicate as effectively as they can, and support each other to the best of their abilities. Honestly, it's relationship goals through and through.

Of course, no relationship is without its bumps in the road and hardships. And those hardships definitely come front and center with this case

Donovan is nothing if not a protector. It's part of his very core. And Jon? He runs head first into trouble like a moth runs to a flame. He doesn't necessarily mean to. But it kind of happens anyway. And when that happens, it rather starts one hell of a wild ride.

From beginning to end, this one stumped me. And it wasn't long before I realized that I just had to go with it. Enjoy the ride. And see where it would take me. And it took me to quite the place. Not one I could have ever really seen coming. But with dogged determination and the unending support of his partner, and his team, Jon does get to the bottom of the mystery. Even if it catches everyone quite by surprise.

Overall, two books in, I am adoring this series immensely. I love the dynamics between the characters, I love the relationship that continues to build and grow stronger between Jon and Donovan, and I love the introduction of Donovan's BFF Garrett.

And knowing how weird the cases have been so far, I can only anticipate the the mysteries are about to get much, much weirder.
