This book owns my heart. I love each and every character, and all of their stories. I think the way school and post secondary education was represented was awesome. It felt so just almost fever dreamy feeling recognized in a book. I think its often ignored how school makes people feel. We value our grades over ourselves and lose ourselves trying to get them. Academic anxiety, and depression stemming from it is extremely real. I like the topics this book covered and its now my all time favourite book. Also thank you for writing a book where a girl and boy can just be friends♡

I have the most respect and appreciation for Alice Oseman and their work. You quite literally are changing many peoples lives with these stories in ways I’m sure you never imagined possible.

bleachers//for tracy hyde (this kept playing inside my head)

I was gonna rate it 4, but as you can see i’ve changed my mind. I picked it up because i saw somewhere that it was sad. Well, yeah. It made me feel all kind of things. From missing my friends to hating my family to hating my school to hating my entire existence to feeling extremely lonely at 3AM. Being born in a brown family, the story was very relatable.

She asked me, “Remind me why you wanted to be head girl?” And I said, “Because I’m great at it,” but I was thinking, because universities love it.

The story is mostly about Frances and Aled. I really liked that the friendship between them was platonic. At times, I really, deeply missed my friends and the warmth that they always radiates. I absolutely love books, movies, series about the value of friendship. At one point, I almost became jealous of Aled.

“I don’t think there’s anything you can do. It’s not your fault.” “I know,” I said. So I went to bed. And I just cried. Which is pretty pathetic, to be honest. Which is what I am. I shouldn’t be surprised at myself.

There were major points in the book that i could deeply feel. Because i’ve been going through the same situation with some of my friends. I even reacted to the misunderstanding and the way Aled treated Frances. I was absolutely pissed off and that was the whole point I guess. there aren’t much that could’ve been altered. that misunderstanding/incident was inevitable. Aled portrayed a typical, mad teenager and Frances portrayed an absolutely innocent teenager. Jackass couldn’t have used her words against her at least, that’s the worst.

“If he can’t even think rationally enough to see that you’ve been his friend for all this time, what’s the point in trying? He clearly doesn’t care about you enough to value your relationship. You shouldn’t have to care either.” She shook her head. “You don’t need friends like that.”

Aled’s mum. Aw hell nah, she reminded me our entire society. i’ve seen parents being indescribably violent with their 7-year-olds in front of their friends. And the families somehow boasted that their children were terrified of their existence. This culture is so deeply rooted than I almost believed that there weren’t any good, non-violent parents. And then i saw my aunt my entire life. So many people had to and has to suffer so much for the brown society, to meet the standards. So many souls have decided to give up because they weren’t enough.

People move on quicker than I can comprehend. People forget you within days, they take new pictures to put on Facebook and they don’t read your messages. They keep on moving forward and shove you to the side because you make more mistakes than you should. Maybe that was fair. Who was I to judge, really?

The story had many topics like parental abuse, mental health, academic pressure, friendship, homosexuality etc discussed. Some of the topics were executed well, some weren’t. For example, if we could read Aled’s pov from 50% till the end, we could understand what was going on inside his head and how he was feeling more. We could’ve at least felt the last few months more. And homosexuality was one of the topics that weren’t described well. At least Frances could’ve given Aled a better answer when he asked about Frances’s sexuality and how she had found out she was bi.

“But now … I’m just … when you get to this age, you realise that you’re not anyone special after all.”

Come on, Frances was just dumb about February Friday. Lmao even i’m not that dumb.

“Family means nothing,” she said, and I knew she believed it. “You have no obligation to love your family. It wasn’t your choice to be born.”

lastly, Carys was a boss bitch. She was honest. She was forgiving. We love Carys.

Wouldn’t recommend to read if you’re looking for something cheerful. A whole bunch of trigger warnings can be used here. but be aware that this was a very, VERY sad book. It could’ve been sadder if the author gave us Aled’s povs but it was already sad enough. So, think twice before picking this up.

maybe i had high expectations, maybe i've gotten too old for these stories, or maybe this book just didn't set out to deliver anything that unique

I love Alice Oseman and her Heartstopper novels and everything, but teenagers who go to college don’t talk like that. The plot was good, but the dialogues were boring, the messages not reliable with the reality, childish actions…
I’m sorry Alice, but it wasn’t my favourite.
