I was surprised by this book.
I gave it a 5/5, but if I had a bigger scale probably would've hit about an 8.4, in rating. Not a fan of the 5 star dealio.
The book was a little slow. I got through it quicker than the others, but that was merely my own time. It was just not as action packed as I thought it would be. A part that excited me was when but still, I wasn't quite as excited as I thought I would be.
But back to why it surprised me.
Normally I'm not a fan of split-pov stories, at all. I find myself frustrated and annoyed, and it's often hard to grasp the full action of a story when it's split before two (or more) people. And this "grudge" against these types of narratives kind-of carried through a little as I read.
Initially, I was annoyed, thinking what could possibly happen between Adrian and Sydney separately that would require entirely individual viewpoints? And because of this thought process, I didn't open up heaps to the idea. Even as I read through and could almost appreciate the need for it, I still wasn't a fan of Adrian's chapters. I enojoyed Sydney's wit. It was an excellent mind to be writing as, and clearly Mead does it well, but Adrian just seemed lovey-dovey, flitty, and well... a bit stupid! It just seemed like... kind of bad writing to me. But clearly, I knew that was Mead. As the book progressed it did get better... I started to enjoy both parts equally but it's still hard to process.
I mean, I should've guessed - we all should've - the reason for the split-perspective. Anyway, thrilled that I finished this just after Silver Shadows is released, I can get my fix immediately.

Sydney was almost attacked by Adrian's Moroi old friends, I thought things would be shaken up, old school. Also, the Strigoi hunt. But back to why it surprised me.

The ending, of course we'd need different views to show how Adrian's going to come to her rescue.
Took a break from reading but finally finished. This one was harder to get into
I had some problems with this book, mostly because of the duel POV. I also lost interest in the conflicts that were happening but hopefully the next book will get me excited about this series again!
Wow. This book was amazing. The emotion in the book is just incredible. And the character interactions are better than ever. Finally, we get to see Adrian and Sydney as a couple, and the risks that they and the rest of the gang are in for. It's awesome too because Rose, Dimitri, and Lissa come back! And we get a first-person Adrian perspective which is really interesting and allowed the plot to expand more.
This is by far the best in the Bloodlines series so far because all of the tensions and the secret rebellion Sydney is going through is finally coming to a head. For the first time, we get to see Sydney as not just an intellectual soul, but a passionate, fiery person determined to do the right thing even if it puts her into incredible danger. I also liked that they brought back up the issue of killing Strigoi that was such a struggle in the Vampire Academy series.
A great read that I really enjoyed. I'm eagerly anticipating book 5. Thanks Richelle Mead for leaving me on a killer cliffhanger.

I didn't think I could love Richelle Mead and her characters anymore than I do already.
But this book was amazing. I may be biased as I love all her series... And although hesitant about a spin off of VA when I loved that story line so much- I can't wait to see what else Mead has in store for Adrian and Sydney. At every turn I expected her to derail their romance, so I was pleasantly surprised when they went strong until the end.
I can't help but physically laugh out loud at Adrian's sarcastic remarks, and since the VA series- I've learnt to love him that much more!!

The fact that this book starts off with Adrian's point of view is just brilliant. The fact that us readers get an insight to Adrian's head throughout the whole book is even better.
Mead has excelled herself with this one. VA allowed snippets into Lissa's head via Rose, however Mead allows us to actually experience Adrian's highs and lows through his perspective. The best thing for me is that they're both so conscious on ho much they love each other, and there's no doubting, when it's very obvious.
Eddie also plays a key part in this novel, and although he's not a main focus, Mead should consider a spin off series with his story...
These novels never disappoint, and I love the new story lines, and the twists and turns we experience... making us unable to sleep at night.
I always thought I had found the one heroin protagonist I loved in Rose Hathaway. However Sydney Sage is a sure contender!!!
