- Verschachtelte Struktur der Geschichte interessant.
- Teilweise sehr lustig geschrieben. Viel Ironie.

This is one of the few editions (or the only one?) that has the original and full story of the book, even though it's Reclam. It's the best edition of this book I have found so far.

E.T.A. Hoffmann never ceases to amaze me; what he managed to do with this book is something I have not seen/read since.

It was very confusing at first, but once I had sorted the book into two parts, it got less confusing and actually understood what the author was trying to do.

I can only recommend it to students of German literature or lovers of romantic literater / Hoffmann in general.

Schade, dass es den "dritten Band", in dem noch einiges zu klären gewesen wäre, nie gegeben hat.
Kater Murr ist eine herrliche Parodie auf zeitgenössische Entwicklungsromane und den Geniegedanken der Klassik.

It took me a while to get into the book, the sentences just had too much romantic flourishes. However, I really liked the last chapter. Also, whenever the professors talk about Murr, I found the book absolutely hilarious.
In terms of its description of emotion, and the heights and chasms it an bring people, it was very well done. There is a conscious desire to describe mental illness, done better than most books I've read.
This book is undoubtedly a classic. It is innovative, even today, and I can see its influences on others major writers. I have no doubt that both Calvino and Soseki were influenced by this book.
In the end, this book was not for me, however, I have great respect for this book. It was definitely ahead of its time, and by a large margin.
I wish this book was finished. An unfinished book is tragic.

On a side note, the end note 21 on the last chapter, is wrong (I believe). Palestrina, the composer, did not succeed in persuading the Council of Trent to allow polyphonic church music. Although one should never reference Wikipedia, here it is:
