Maybe I’m just simpleminded but young adult books are genuinely so much more satisfying to read than the books I’m supposed to read as an adult. This book in particular addressed so many different things—mental illness, tense father-son relationships, sibling relationships, the second gen immigrant experience, Zoroastrianism, the politics in Iran, etc—and managed to wrap all of those different plot lines up in a convincing and cathartic way at the end. It’s so impressive and I wish I had read this book when I was actually a young adult.

This book is really wonderful. It covers depression in a thoughtful, realistic way, and shows how you can still have a life with mental illness. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about Persian culture and history, and Darius' narration was engaging. The author did an incredible job writing each of Darius' relationships with his family members and other characters. This is a comforting, easy-to-read, slice-of-life book.

This book is my favourite. The main character Darius is my favourite.
I could connect with Darius in many moments. The feelings, thoughts and his way of thinking, over thinking, everything I could relate to him in many situations. I had criticised him in some situations too.
As a whole this book is my another favourite of all time.

This was not a guaranteed 5⭐️ book. Not until about the last 30%, when I realized the characters had wormed their way into my heart. I want to give Darius, and his parents, and his grandparents, and his sister, and Sohrab, and even Chip a big ol hug. They all need it.

I really loved this book 🧡 It is very character-driven, not a lot happens, but you get to really know the characters and see how this trip changes them, and specially how they change each other. It's about family, friendship, self-identity and, in the author's words, "how depression can affect a life without rulling it".
