A decent book that rather overstayed its welcome. I would've preferred it stop around the 300 page area, as I feel it definitely went on a bit too long. But a young Thrawn was fascinating, and I loved his friendship and mentor role with Jorj Car'das who was exceptional too. I honestly preferred Thrawn's plot to the Jedi plot!

Give it a go, a guilty pleasure read that doesn't take too much brain power to read through and has a guilty pleasure nature similar to a Dan Brown novel. It's not Hemingway but it still entertains. I had read the Thrawn Trilogy before this, so it was similar to seeing the Star Wars prequels after seeing the original theory (without all the terrible though, of course). It's a fun addition to some additional possibilities out there in the Star Trek universe.

Another excellent Star Wars story from Zahn! There's not much that I can say but that if you liked the original Thrawn trilogy and "Survivor's Quest", you have to read this book! It's a perfectly-constructed pentalogy that should have been the basis for the Disney Star Wars movies.

Decided I needed to read all the Thrawn books after we started watching “Ahsoka”. :3

I liked this one. The ending was a bit abrupt, and Thrawn is as ever too clever to believe sometimes (but still fun to read, like Hercule Poirot). I did have some minor issues – how quickly Car’das (and Maris) and Thrawn picked up each other’s languages, even given that they had a common language to start from; why the Chiss have that potent radiation bomb when they have a very strong directive not to be the aggressors in battle; how Car’das is knowingly involved in Thrawn’s plan to trick the Vagaari into coming after him, but none of that comes through in the chapter where we see him running off (but maybe I just need to reread that section).

I enjoyed Lorana Jinzler as a viewpoint character and especially seeing her struggle against Jorus C’baoth’s opinion of what it means to be a Jedi.

This was the first Zahn I read after the Thrawn trilogy and it really didn't do it for me.

Great book for big Star Wars/Zahn fans.  I'm not sure the casual reader would enjoy it as much...
