This book was fun. I enjoyed its playfulness. It is reminiscent of some of the classics (Narnia especially), but still marks out a path of its own. It is also delightfully Pacific Northwest.
Love a children's book that also has blood and human sacrifice. Beautifully done. Makes me want to go explore Forrest Park in Portland (aka, the Wildwood).
I'm shocked this is on as many lists as it is. Must be because the author is the lead singer of The Decemberists. Occasionally preachy. Never engaging. I usually get lost in childrens' books, not this one. Blech.

I finished it. It was fine, but I’m not interested enough at the moment to read the sequels. I want to read Narnia again, which this is compared to. This book did not have the heft of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
An enjoyable Narnia-style fantasy. I have to say I was thrown a bit by the Greek-style "Ancients' Grove" ruin: I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that if you want an ancient lost civilization in the woods outside of Portland, it's not Greek. But there's lots of action and well-drawn characters.
I think the story was good but there wasn't enough character development.
