Promising start, but
slow pacing and dull details
do not inspire.

3.5ish stars. Closer to 4 than 3. Good story, charming illustrations, and very likable characters, especially some of the secondary animal ones.

this was so much darker than i thought it would be for a middle grade book!

Colin Meloy is mainly known as the front man for the indie rock group, The Decemberists, whose songs are full or whimsy, fantasy, and a bit of historic flair. It makes perfect sense that his foray into writing is a children’s fantasy trilogy. Under Wildwood is the second of the trilogy and the main characters - Prue and Curtis - have many adventures in both the Portland that we know to exist and Meloy’s fantastic Wildwood. They are on a journey to return peace to the wood and there is plenty to stand in their way. The books are well crafted and exquisitely detailed, including vivid and fanciful illustrations, but are at times slow paced.
