This is a good adventure book, with all the great elements of Colin Meloy's writing and rightly showing the responsibility for young brothers than only big sisters/brothers can understand. But it didn't deserve more stars because the infuriating reaction from Prue's parents when they discovered what happened with Mac. I can't imagine a decent parent giving up on one of their children. Alas, it's too long for a children book. Anyway, despite that, a fun book.

Such a lovely YA read with stunning artwork sprinkled throughout! Despite their differences, humans and animals band together and save the main characters baby brother - the journey there is whimsical, exciting, and touching.
*Finally* finished this one after working on it for ages. Starts slow and Meloy manages to twee it up a bit much for even my tastes at time, but once it gets rolling, it's a banger of a youthful fantasy story.

A very pleasant read. Although meant for a younger audience, it didn’t feel too childish or simple. The fairytales tropes in this story take you back into a childlike state of wonder, aching to know what happens next. And the beautifull illustrations add to that experience. A wonderfull story, beatifully executed.
mostly only finished this because laika is making a movie out of it... it was really ok
Does anyone else think Colin Meloy is probably a Civil War re-enactor?

A little slow to start but it really started to pick up after 100 pages. Going to move on to the next book some time soon hopefully.
I would have loved to read this to my boys when they were in elementary school. As an adult, I can appreciate the story, but middle-grade novels are always a challenge for me. I started listening to it and did not love or connect with the narrator. Then I read a printed copy for a while, but I never wanted to pick it up, so then I finished up with audiobook, despite not enjoying how the narrator portrayed the voices of the characters. I think this was just a case of picking up this book at the wrong time and in the wrong medium to begin with. I loved the illustrations and I really appreciate a world so deliberately created...and described in such detail. It just wasn't for me.
It really wasn't bad but it reminded me of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Since I LOVE Narnia it really couldn't compare.
