This was an interesting story about magic and warfare and bargains. But it felt long and had some really brutal imagery I wasn't expecting in a mg book. The characters weren't deep enough for me to get hooked. And the parents were just...kind of awful. But it had some neat plot points and good descriptions, so I don't begrudge the time spent.

The only reason I finished this book is because I was 300 pages in, and felt this need to be able to count it towards my goal of books to read for the year, and if I had stopped half way through I wouldn't have felt like I could claim it as a book I "read" this year. And then I would have felt like the time I spent reading the first 300 pages was wasted. *sigh*

Everyone I know who has read this book loves it. I'm not sure what is wrong with me. I read the first chapter right before it was due back at the library, and I was interested enough to check it out a second time when I saw it reappear on the shelf. But after the first chapter it went all down hill for me.

The plot just seemed really far-fetched. Usually I can handle far-fetched if there is some sort of explanation, or good details, or story-line supporting the far-fetchedness...but this felt really shallow to me.

Maybe I'm asking too much of a junior fiction novel. That's probably it.

This was such a fun book - can’t wait to read it with my kids when they are older.

Really beautifully written, although at times a bit wordy for me. We read it with my 8-year old and he was able to follow the story, despite the advanced vocabulary, and really appreciated it- especially the battle scenes.

This is reeeeally dark for a middle grade. I went into it hoping for a cozy kids adventure. But holy heck, its violent.
