Reread this for the Read Harder prompt "reread a childhood favorite book." I remember liking this book, but honestly did not remember anything that happened in it. I was surprised at how serious some of the themes were-graphic descriptions of death, war, government corruption and the like-but they obviously did not affect me when I first read this in 4th grade. This book was extremely slow at times, especially (weirdly) at moments of high action. If the pacing had been more varied, I would have enjoyed it more.

I liked it! Nice and cozy
Wonderful adventure novel, very much a fantasy but set in modern-day Portland (or rather, the wild woods just beyond Portland). I am looking forward to reading the next installments in the series and plan to pass my hardcopy along to a young niece.
10/10 brain chemistry permanently altered from the ripe age of 8. the most insufferable person about this book (i have a list of questions WITH EVIDENCE) about the book’s lore that i WOULD ASK COLIN MELOY if i had the chance and he wouldnt look ag me like im absolutely insane. drawing of the bandit king wounded on the rocks is an imagw that is BURNED INTO MY MEMORY i cannot believe i read this when j was a child “children’s fantasy” this is “children’s fantasy” in the way rhat over the garden wall is a kid’s show. laika studios is going to absolutely traumatize a new generation kf children with this book as a movie cannot wait
Took me while to pick this book up as I got it back in middle school and I wish I read it sooner. The reason I picked this up was because of the announcement of it becoming an animated film doon and as any reader knows the book comes before the adaptation.
The writing was beautifully done, pacing was nice and the twist was unimaginable!
If you wish to go back in time to your younger self and get immersed into talking animals, government hidden away deep in the woods by magic and dive deep into secrets that have been held for years this is the book for you!

I basically skimmed the last few chapters. They were very, very boring. I think that the book should have been broken into two books. Not sure if I'm even interested in reading the next books.

I enjoyed this book, even though it is LONG! I am reading The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe to my kids, and it really reminded me of that.
