I expected to deeply enjoy this book. I was incredibly disappointed. It is far too wordy in a way that interferes with the pacing of the story. I didn't feel a connection with the characters. There are too many side characters. The parents just let their daughter run off into the woods to save her brother without attempting to join her. The plot is okay, but doesn't balance out the flaws in the book.
I think some serious editing would have made a big difference. If you're going to read this book, go in with moderate expectations.

This 16 hour audio book accompanied us on our vacation. Inventive story with a twist on your typical fairytale. Narrator was not great and it could have been shorter.
I originally picked this book up because it was pretty. I then read a scathing review about how it was not appropriate for children and decided to be the judge of that... AND WOW, it's a wild time. While I don't feel the book is inappropriate for children, it did throw me at times. We had children drinking and baby sacrifices. My only true concern with the book is the length. It druggggggg on at times (it took me over a year to finish), and really would have benefited from having some more fast past writing, especially in knowing the entire book takes place in a week. Otherwise, a really fun read!
in the before-time, when i didn't have a tiny human nipping at my heels and demanding entertainment during my every waking hour (except for that blessed hour or so when he's taking a nap, and i can do things like go to the bathroom alone), i would've finished this book in like 2 days. i wouldn't have been able to put it down. colin meloy is a great writer; i already knew that from his songs. turns out he's also a FANTASTIC novelist. my single and only complaint about this whole tome (and it's a healthy one, clocking in at 550+ pages) is that apparently in the pacific northwest, they call trail mix "gorp," and i think that's quite possibly the single most obnoxious and unappetizing word for a food product i've ever heard in my life, even worse than "potted meat product". then again, i am too easily annoyed by things like words ("staycation" gives me violent tendencies, and don't even get me started on that word that starts with "chill" and ends with the last 2 syllables of "relaxing") or mouth noises. so there you go.
now to start on the second one...

I loved the illustrations and the story. I was always drawn into the story and found myself imagining the plight of the characters. There were times while I was reading that I was tearing up and didn't even realize it. I hope the next book goes into more detail about who Curtis is. Overall, a great read and highly recommend.
