Clear, concise, and immensely readable. Great for anyone curious to find out about England's history without having to delve too deep

This short history really is short. The hardcover is 350ish pages and it covers 1500 years of history. Because it covered so much in so little page space, it was very often a series of names and dates. I knew something about English history before this, and I feel like this added to my knowledge, but I definitely got lost sometimes. I feel like if this were your first book on the history of England, you would be even more confused.

I wish the author had added some things, like features on particular people or places or buildings or events. Even sidebars could have been helpful. Adding maps to show territorial boundaries for pre-Norman Conquest England would have been EXTREMELY helpful.

Overall, it was a good short history. It served its intended purpose well and did get me interested in certain aspects of history that I would like to research more.

As other reviewers have said. A brisk view of dates and names of monarchs and politicians. It's not the method of learning history I particularly enjoy as it lacks intrigue and human understanding, but I got enough from it and I'm pleased I did it as an audiobook rather than read as I never would have got through it.
