Backman writes humanity very well. He constantly touches on topics that many people endure, and have to navigate. The theme of friendship, acceptance, and empathy was strong throughout this book. It was a beautiful story of how one person, no matter how cantankerous, can impact so many lives, and lives are often intertwined.

oh my goodness i cried so hard
This is a beautiful, inventive and often hilarious story of grief and healing, told from the POV of a precocious almost-8-year-old. I laughed and cried, as they say. But what really made this book special was the way Backman describes the stories that Elsa's grandmother told about the Land-of-Almost-Awake. The intricacy with which the stories and real life unfold reveals depth, emotion, tragedy and so much love. I really devoured this book, and every novel I read by Backman makes me want to read another.

Gorgeous storytelling. Excited to go down the Fredrik Backman rabbit hole, his prose is simply phenomenal. Elsa’s voice is so clear in this story, and the author is brilliant in the ways he uncovers the story for us slowly through her eyes. A great read for anyone who’s grieved, loved deeply, or found themselves realizing how much more there was to learn about people. I’m not “almost eight”, but I feel like at almost thirty I have just about as much (if not less) figured out than Elsa does. The beauty is the journey of figuring it all out and the importance of people along the way.

I was a bit confused and frustrated for a lot of the book cause I couldn’t tell if parts that didn’t make much sense were meant to be that way because it’s written in a fairytale style or if it was because the narrator is 7 years old and was seeing all these things in the world from a child perspective. Some of that never got answered, but enough of it came together by the end and there were enough sweet, touching moments that I ended up liking it.
