Backman writes eclectic and eccentric ensembles with humour and compassion and using the perspective of a child allows him to slowly reveal the stories that have been surrounding Elsa her whole life. I found the use of the imagined world slightly protracted and the book is at its strongest at the beginning as the characters are introduced and their connections realised . The book reaches an emotional swell towards the end that did bring tears. If I have a couple of trivial criticisms it’s that a woman of granny’s accomplishments would definitely not as spelt so badly - and isn’t chocolate lethal for dogs ?!?!

I loved this book so so much!! Book club (two guys) did not so much. I also read this in one day, while they broke it up over the month. I suggest reading it as quickly as possible, in order to keep up with the story. There is a lot of imagination, and a lot of puzzle piecing, which is why I think I loved it so much, reading it in pretty much one sitting. Regardless, I haven't emoted this much reading a book, in a long time.
This is a wonderfully special book. One of the more interesting and different books I've read in a long time.
