4.5 stars.
I really enjoyed the first book in this series and knew I would continue it, but I waited a few months. I didn't know what to start reading so I picked the second book up and I wish I had gotten to it sooner! This book, like the series so far, has been one plot twist after another. The idea for this series is basically just human decency vs. human depravity in a dystopian world. I really enjoy it and I'm obviously going to continue this series and read more Blake Crouch. I'm also considering watching some of the TV adaptation but I don't see how it could manage to be anywhere close to how good the books are.

As fun it was to follow Ethan in "Pines" in his bewilderment and through the mystery of it all, so frustrating it was for me to read "Wayward". If one thinks about the whole premise for a second, it all comes down to this: this is BS, nothing adds up, least of all the numbers (e.g. years, population....). And thinking "why should it be this and no other way?", the answer here is always: because plot, and to hell with logic.
Furthermore many of the characters sounded and felt the same to me. They are all flat af. (With the exception of the comically evil Pam.)

Blake Crouch has set the bar high with his other books so I still liked this but not as much as I expected to. It also felt a bit more like a transition between book one and two than its own plot to me. Also almost every male character in this series is awful and the one guy I liked was barely in two scenes
