I'm sure when this came out it was amazing, as not many people had travelled the world. However, in this time I don't need to know all of the facts of the American railway or how much each boat weighed.
Also, I guessed the ending (no spoilers) and a large proportion of his journey was very uneventful. The eventful parts were interesting to read, there just weren't enough of them

I thought that maybe I'd like this book a lot better then I did, but it's on the better end of classics that I've read. I know this is a translated book from France. later this year I'll read it in French and see if I like it better.

Well written for its time, but ultimately a celebration of white supremacy, European modernity, and colonial empire.

I can’t believe I’ve never read this book before! What a wonderful adventure. I listened on audiobook narrated by Jim Dale (of the Harry Potter audiobooks) and it was integrated with music from the 1956 film. It lost one star for the casual racism and colonialism which, although common in 1872, is certainly not acceptable by today’s standards. Also, the cover suggested there would be a hot air balloon ride, but that was false advertising as there were no hot air balloons in this story.
