Superb, I think this is my favourite Maigret book so far. A great cast of characters and the plot was very good, a bit more action than most Maigret books.
Only spoiled with Rowan Atkinson on the cover, he is the polar opposite to how Maigret is described ...

Out of all the Maigret's I've read this one tops the list. Whilst I always enjoy these books, some can merely serve as a little atmospheric palette cleanse between big reads. This one however has a great plot and the battle between a Parisian serial killer (some decades before the term had even entered the lexicon) and our finest fictional Frenchman is deftly and addictively told.
As usual for Simenon the cinematic atmosphere is bang on point and you really feel you are a little fly on the wall or a ghost in the room observing the whole story.
Masterful.

I usually avoid serial killer stories because I honestly find them boring. It probably helps that this was written before serial killers became a pop culture fixation, so it didn't get on my nerves like most other examples of the genre do.
Even by Maigret standards, this is a book that is keenly interested in criminal and human psychology, though its most interesting aspect is not so much the suspect as that of his adoring family. . . .

A good read but lacking some depth. There have been 5 Ripper style killings without any success in solving them. Maigret sets out to encourage another in order to catch his man.
