This is a fast-paced fantasy story full of action and magic.

On starting the book, I wondered if it would turn out to be dark and creepy, but that really isn't the case. There are some plot points that are somewhat dark in nature, but the tone overall is much more adventurous with occasional humour (there's a Doctor Who reference that will amuse any fans of that show).

I liked the main characters Myra and Rohan quite a bit, in particular the friendship between the two of them which felt quite like siblings - arguing and falling out, but in the end always there for each other.  I found Myra's relationship with her mother interesting but underdeveloped - I'm unsure if Stowell is planning a sequel, but I hope that if she is that we will learn more about Myra's mother and their past.

Overall I think this is a book that many kids will enjoy having on their shelves (and not solely because the cover art is lovely!).

NB I was sent a free copy of this book by the publisher. The opinions above are entirely my own.
