AMAZING. Just amazing.  This book made me both laugh and cry,  all while keeping me locked into the plot - I couldn't put it down.  I listened via audiobook, and I'm glad I did. The narrator is amazing as well. She perfectly captures the essence of each POV. Although,  I still would've loved the hard copy book too! Karin Slaughter writes SO SO well.  You see,  hear,  and feel all that the characters do. The amount of research that went into this story can't be over looked. The medical accuracy, the experience accuracy of the c-spine fusion and the addiction,  legal jargon,  etc. This author earns her keep! So impressive.  Covid details are well done too, without being overbearing or center stage.  It feels like any other time frame detail,  like describing the cars and clothing in a story set in the 1950s. I loved the conclusion.  Don't skip the epilogue or Dead Reader sections!

As always with Slaughter's books, please check TWs before reading - Slaughter never pulls any punches in her books, and this was no exception.

I think I might officially be a Karin Slaughter fan - at this point I'd read anything from her. This was probably one of my new favourites - it twisted and turned and kept me guessing, while still staying n the realm of possible. I love how Slaughter writes sisters - Leigh and Calli were great characters, and I just loved their relationship.

Slaughter's works are definitely dark and violent, but it rarely feels gratuitous (although it sometimes veers in that direction), and I think that's a huge part of her style and why she stands out among so many thriller writers.
