Why did it take me so long to finish this book? I'd pick it up and read a few pages then set it down again for days at a time. Once I finally committed to finishing it (it helps when it's a past due library book) I couldn't put it down. I devoured the majority of it in 4 days. (which for me is an achievement since I read so slowly) Honestly, I'm not sure which character I loved more - Leigh or Callie? I loved the idea of these things happening during the pandemic, when things were already so tense and tumultuous. It took me back to the moments of the pandemic when you wanted it to be over but had no idea what tomorrow looked like when it was finally over or whether it was really ever going to be over.

The story is good, however I feel it was longer than necessary and became repetitive in areas. Very lengthy, graphic descriptions throughout, including explicit details of child rape and other violence. Some may find it distasteful or disturbing, especially if you listen on audio rather than reading.

I apologise in advance🫣.. I’ve LOVED all of Slaughter’s books I’ve read so far + I KNOW her books are re known for being dark, BUT this one was just too much for me. Perhaps it was how realistic the audio version felt with the gross dialogue being read aloud but there was a LOT of heavy + descriptive sexual abuse/violence. I liked the alternating perspectives from the two sisters, the exploration of trauma was done well + the plot was chilling and gritty.. just be warned, it’s not for the faint of heart!
