HP Lovecraft had a unique way of blending the weirdest fiction with a narration that gives almost every story a sense of truth. You can see the influence of HP Lovecraft on today's horror fiction and also in popular conspiracy theories. But as much us I can appreciate the art I can't help but see the racism and misogyny. All the main characters are white cis men. Every none white character is belittled and described as ugly. It is hard to miss when you read them all together. I don't recommend.

Lovecraft has quite a way with words able to create an intense and ghostly mood with words.
He is also a product of his time and definitely had an influence on our current times.
Although the ethnocentrism, racism and sexism is typical of his times - what perhaps I find the most concerning about his view point is the way that his expert use of language validates and romanticizes the horror of the other and is based on a deeper premise which underlies most racism and white supremacy - the idea that there are certain species and/or races that are more advanced or evolved and others are of less value at best and at worst evil and horrific.

I simply cannot get into an H.P. Lovecraft story. I have tried his books, and now Audible. He is a good writer, but perhaps his stories are just too dated to be scary. I think it is his mix of space into the supernatural, or more likely, his over-use of certain words (gibbous, nebulous, uncanny, effervescent). I am sure there are devotees of his work, and they are not wrong for loving it. I just don't.

I've been trying to get a primer on the history of cosmic horror but this man's racism is making me hostile to the act of reading in general. I thought I was going to be able to get through it after I got past the cat, but the accumulated weight of idiocy broke me.
