I'm still not going to read abridged books, but I'd have loved this more if Hugo had had an editor.

“This book is a drama whose main character is the infinite.
Man is the secondary character.”

—Part II, Book VII, Chapter I.

A dof like me could devour this monstrous volume only with that in mind.

Such a monumental book so powerfully written. I enjoyed it thorougly in spite of its length, its redundancy in the attempts to elucidate a sole point, and its admittedly horrendously tedious recurrent and extensive digressions (which was more overwhelming than how Melville had done with Moby-Dick and Cervantes with Don Quixote).

I loved Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables like I loved Charles Dickens’ works.

This book is always a favorite of mine. In times of chaos like these, it helps to reread an old comforting classic.

It is a shame when something is all but perfect. The heart in these characters, their pain, and this story is immeasurable. If the story had perhaps been awarded an editor before its initial publishing, it would likely BE perfect. But it's too long (it took me 7 months to read), the tangents are too great, and what is truly a profound work of art gets lost in the meandering paragraphs and lengthy rants. I was skipping entire chapters just to find where the story was going to resume. But, the book did what books intend to do; it made me FEEL, and I commend Hugo for that.

It's a great book ngl but i just wanna ask my middle school teacher why would you make a 10 year old read this. I couldn't get over it for weeks and I cried whenever I got reminded of it.
