I always feel like I'm taking a chance when I read a poetry collection. If I'm not lucky I find myself twelve layers deep in metaphor with my eyes glazing over and no idea what the poet was going for. That is not this book. This poetry doesn't pull the punches and it's great.

Each poem was strong and crisp (idk how else to describe them). A powerful voice in poetry I need to read more of n

“I like your poems because they seem so real” this collection was so beautifully black. I listened to the audio which was narrated by the author
“I thought this poem was funny then everybody got sad” - another description of Marshall’s poems - moments of humor and poignancy while talking about the black experience and his specifically.
Now I need this on my shelf with a quickness.

"perhaps our rage at the other is just the way we fill what we don’t know about ourselves."

Nate Marshall's recent collection that celebrates African-American culture and hip-hop while examining the powers that threaten and entangle with them. Really beautiful, really thought-provoking, definitely read many of them multiple times, definitely wrote a few of these down to keep and think over, highly HIGHLY recommend reading this or buying the collection if you can.

a very necessary celebration of the black vernacular in literature, in this case poetry. lovely style and so many incredibly clever poems. i don't think picking a favorite is something i can do here, so i'm not going to. truly an amazing collection!
