I was so disappointed in this book as it was sold to me as a gender swapped Phantom of the Opera. That part is accurate but the quality was just not there.

This is a very mediocre book which I honestly think would've benefited from taking place in a magical version of our world as opposed to a whole new world. It was set in Vaureille which is basically magical France and all the characters dropped random French words into conversation which was jarring to me.

The world building was also very flat and I felt I learned very little about the people or the world by the end. There were just no enough details given about the world, the magic system or the history beyond bare sketches.

Isda and Emeric were very well thought out and three dimensional characters but again everyone else was flat. (I did like that Isda was incredibly flawed which is rare to see for a female main character). Or rather Cyril was flat since he was the only other character we spent any time with. He *spoiler* does end up being our main villain but his motivations are barely fleshed out. He comes across as a cartoon villain with mommy issues.

Last of all, the ending. This should have been a villain origin story. Emeric should've died and lead to Isda's descent into true villainy. I think it would've served the story better than what we did get.

I'm still giving it 3 stars as the writing was beautifully descriptive and the romance between Emeric and Isda was sweet. But overall, so disappointing.

Freaking fantastic book!
The setting. Oh, the setting! Gorgeous opera house, detailed city, and the main characters room!
The characters are depicted in lovely detail. I fell in love with Isda immediately. I wasn't a big fan of her guardian Cyril. And there are no words for Emeric!
The story line follows very closely to The Phantom of the Opera, which I saw many years ago but there are similarities.
The writing of this book was superb. So many great details and played out lovely in my mind. I could see this as a movie for sure.

I must say that the ending wasn't surprising but nonetheless I was hopeful.
I loved this book and will await future releases from Jessica S. Olson.

I'm going give this a 3.7 for a lovely retelling of phantom with gender bent casting. Reading this book, there was some confusion and rereading aspects of the world and how the memory magic works. I feel like this reads as a debut author and that the writing and plot will get stronger the more the author writes. Great choice for fans of retellings, underrated ya, or musical theatre fans delving into fantasy.

I’ve been obsessed with The Phantom of the Opera for years, so I was kind of cautious when picking up a retelling. This book was…eh. I couldn’t shake the feeling that the writing is a bit weak. Some phrases had me rolling my eyes and the insta-love thing is not a vibe. Also, Emeric annoyed me, I don’t like him. He thinks he’s funny, but he’s really not.

That said, it was a fun read with lots of action in the last third, although the ending is abrupt. I also enjoyed the little references to the original.
