I really enjoyed this poetry book. I have personally struggled with moderate to severe depression for years and I felt very seen by some of these poems.
I discovered Sabrina Benaim through her spoken poetry and I am so glad I got this book so I could read the full collection because she’s so talented! If you haven’t heard her do the spoken word, definitely look it up!
Some of my favorites include from this book include:
• explaining my depression to my mother a conversation
• the loneliest sweet potato
• avowal
• feed a fever, starve a cold
• follow-up a prayer / a spell

I really enjoyed explaining my depression to my mother a conversation; so, I’m talking to depression…; on platonic love being a real thing; the parallel of (i) (ii) and avowal; and seven small ways in which i loved myself this week. There were also tons of lovely lines sprinkled throughout. I will say that the run-on sentences made it hard for me to keep focused, and I didn’t like all the lamenting over a boy.
