This was the first non horror short story collection I have read, and I did enjoy it, but I found it a little hard to get into. I went into this expecting that it would be more focused on the earthquake, but I actually liked that each story only mentioned briefly. It made the stories feel less disconnected, which can be a problem with short story collections in my experience. Something I think this book did well was giving the characters depth within a short amount of time. The only story where I didn't become invested in the character was in All God's Children Can Dance, because
the incest made me really uncomfortable and it came out of nowhere and didn't really have an impact on the story.
My favorite story overall was Super-Frog Saves Tokyo because of
how unclear it was whether the events in the story actually happened. And I liked that there wasn't an answer.
But the story with my favorite characters was Honey Pie. The relationships in this story were just really tender and real-feeling. It was also incredible that the entire history of a friend group was fit into such a small page number. Overall I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from Haruki Murakami.
