I honestly don’t know what to say cause I’m still confused about the book and it’s message.
I will say it isn’t bad and I was definitely curious to know what was going to happen, but it just didn’t click with me.

i had high expectations for this bc i rated i want to eat your pancreas and i had that same dream again five stars for each of them, but i think this just fell flat to me. i also feel like im missing something and i don't know what it is. there are also a lot of unanswered questions that are up to the reader's interpretation as per yoru sumino style but idk something just felt off about this book. i still enjoyed it though!

Walaupun aku lama banget baca buku ini, tapi serius deh sebenarnya buku ini cukup menarik. Secara keseluruhan kita akan menyelami pikiran dan perasaan seorang anak remaja menghadapi situasi di sekelilingnya. Bagaimana dia bisa terjebak dalam situasi yang mengusik hati nuraninya. Bagaimana dia belajar untuk memahami teman-teman sekelasnya.
Di edisi terjemahan Bahasa Indonesia, blurbnya cuman “mana sosokmu yang sebenarnya? Yang malam atau yang siang?”. Pas awal-awal buku ini terbit, di sebuah diskusi penerjemahnya mengatakan bahwa blurb ini memang sengaja dibuat singkat seperti ini supaya pembaca tidak terfokus pada kasus perundungan tapi bisa melihat cerita secara keseluruhannya. Setelah membaca buku ini sampai selesai, aku setuju sih dengan keputusan penerjemah.
Ketika aku membaca blurb yang edisi bahasa Inggris di Goodreads, di bayanganku, cerita akan berpusat pada Yano Satsuki, unexpected victim of bullying. Tapi buat aku, cerita ini sebenarnya mengajak kita mengikuti proses seorang anak remaja yang berusaha mencerna kejadian-kejadian yang ada di kelasnya. Dan ini bukan hanya tentang Yano Satsuki, tapi banyak orang lainnya di kelas itu termasuk wali kelas dan guru UKS.
Entah karena aku yang bacanya kurang tekun atau memang ada misteri yang dibiarkan begitu saja di cerita ini tanpa diketahui siapa atau apa yang terjadi di balik beberapa peristiwa. Aku merasa kayaknya emang pengarangnya membiarkan pembaca yang menebak apa yang sebenarnya terjadi. Karena bagiku tidak terlalu mengganggu juga sih apakah misterinya akhirnya terpecahkan atau tidak. Kan ini bukan cerita misteri :-D

Adachi has a secret every night he becomes monster roaming the town because what else is there to do? One night he encounters his classmate Yano the class punching bag so during the day. From that point on they form an uneasy friendship that's redistricted to the night. For though there is one monster at night there are many to face in the daylight.
One of the main points of this story is bullying and the different ways people participate. There are people who become immune to seeing someone constantly bullied if it keeps them safe. The people who will join in only if they have no choice and those that revel in it. Our main character is the kind that turns a blind eye. Playing a part so he doesn't get on the bad side of the people who enjoy the tormenting.
The other main part of the story is about finding the courage to be yourself. At school Adachi is exactly who he needs to be in order to fix in. Every action he makes every word out of his mouth is calculated. All of that changes when he gets to know Yano and when he starts to wonder if who he is as the monster is really who he is.
I highly recommend this book to anyone. It does touch on some tough subjects so use care as needed.

buku Sumino Yoru pertama yang aku baca. di Indonesia sendiri, karyanya udah terbit beberapa. hal pertama yang aku rasakan selama membacanya adalah : ini aneh. khas literatur jepang. tapi aku suka.
dengan sedikit balutan realisme magis, kita diajak mengenali isu perundungan dengan cara dan sudut pandang yang berbeda. lewat sudut pandang tokoh utamanya, kita akan diajak memikirkan tentang pencarian jati diri anak SMP. jadi isu perundungan disini bukan dari karakter yang dirundung, melainkan dari karakter yang diem aja dan gak ngasi reaksi langsung. malahan tokoh yg dirundung sama sekali tidak menunjukkan reaksi tertekan ataupun hal negatif lainnya, malahan dia happy dan lebih menunjukkan reaksi yang aneh.
hal yang menurutku kurang digali lebih dalam lagi adalah mengenai character development nya. kaitan antar karakter itu gak diungkap sampai akhir. jadi kayak masi ada yg ganjel gitu. but, aku suka ceritanya.
