When you truly love someone and they love you in return, you ruin your lives together. That is not a curse, it's what life is, my girl. We all come to ruin, we turn to dust, but whom we love is the thing that lasts.

The Rules of Magic is another prequel to Practical Magic. Another fantastic tale in the Owens family, this time following the old aunts we meet in Practical magic, Franny and Jet, and their brother Vincent, growing up and navigating life and the curse in their own way. It transitioned fantastically to the start of Gillian and Sally's story.

It started out good but didn't go anywhere. I liked the characters but they didn't DO anything. I kept waiting for something to happen but nothing really did and when something halfway interesting started to happen it was cut short. Really not that good of a book. Waste of time.

I love the Owens family as quirky people, as witches, and as siblings. Beloved Franny, Jet, Vincent lived by their own rules some for better others for worse. I preordered Alice Hoffman’s next book!

This didn’t captivate me the way the first book in this series did. I was bored up until parts 5/6. Hopefully Gillian & Sally’s story brings this up for me

I struggle with books with flawed characters at this time in my life. I get that the characters in this book are more realistic but I do struggle with the bad choices and just like pure irrationality of the characters.

This was maybe a 3 or 3.5 for me. Read this book if you have a love of magic, history, beautiful prose, and family epics. Avoid this book if, like me, you are a short chapter girlie. Also avoid if a book with very little plot is not for you. This prequel is definitely an exploration of what came before the novel that is more well known. I don’t think this novel as a whole has an overarching plot or point to it. It was good but it wasn’t great. It felt magical and like a vivid, beautiful world. But I like my books with a little bit of plot in them.
