Okay, so this was my first time rereading this book since my Twilight phase back in like 2008 and this is where things started to go downhill.
I didn't hate this book as much as I thought I was going to, but I did find myself entering rant review territory at times.
My biggest issue with this book is that mental health is handled so poorly. Bella has such a severe depression after Edward leaves that she is near catatonic. Four months pass before Charlie tells Bella she's going to move away and then offers therapy, but when Bella dismisses it, never brings it back up. Personally, I think girlfriend should have been in a therapist's office the second she started screaming in her sleep due to nightmares, but that's just me.
Now, we can chalk up the shitty mental health portrayal to New Moon being ~a product of the times~ but it was still super annoying, especially as it told teenagers that this level of emotional dependence on another person is not only okay but a sign of love. What also makes this worse is that suicide is used flippantly as a "solution" to problems. I hope I don't need to elaborate as to why that is bad, but it came up a lot and made me very uncomfortable to read about.
I think this was also my biggest issue with the use of Jacob in this book. I really wish that Jacob was never meant to be a love interest. I have no issue with Jacob harboring a crush on Bella or Bella even questioning if she has/had feelings for Jacob or if she was just healing from her break up. I really don't like that he was chalked up to simply being an Emotional Support Person.
When their friendship was just being friends, it was fantastic. When there was the leg of the triangle starting to form, eh it started to go downhill.
